TIMES JATIM, JAKARTA – Malang, a picturesque region in Indonesia known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, is home to various traditions that have been passed down through generations. One such tradition is the annual Larung Saji event held at Ngliyep Beach.

This event serves as a symbol of cultural preservation and economic potential for the local community. The Larung Saji event, organized by the Ngliyep community, aims to ensure that the younger generation continues this age-old tradition, ultimately preserving the rich cultural heritage of the area.

Dwi Indrotito Cahyo, Chairman of GANN Malang Raya, emphasized the importance of passing down this tradition from one generation to the next, highlighting its significance in maintaining the region's cultural identity.

Larung refers to a traditional ritual or ceremony that involves offering or throwing symbolic items into the sea. This ritual often holds cultural and spiritual significance and is practiced in various coastal communities in Indonesia.

Saji refers to offerings or offerings made during religious or cultural ceremonies. In the context of the article, it represents the symbolic items that are offered to the sea as part of the Larung ceremony.

Located in the Donomulyo District of Malang, which boasts numerous attractive tourist destinations such as Pasir Panjang, Pantai Modangan, Gunung Kumbang, Sendang Kamulyan, and more, this area holds great economic and cultural potential for the local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM).

The tourism destinations in the Malang Regency contribute significantly to the local economy, particularly in the vicinity of Ngliyep Beach in South Malang. Donomulyo District, in particular, stands out due to its abundance of beautiful beachfront locations.

Supriyanto, the District Head of Donomulyo, added that cultural events like Larung Labuhan Gunung Kumbang and cultural processions play a pivotal role in preserving the nation's culture. These traditions are actively participated in by the local residents. The highlight of the event is the procession from Ngliyep Beach to the summit of Gunung Kumbang, which spans approximately 300 meters.

One of the key rituals during the Larung Saji is the offering of symbolic items to the sea. Among these offerings is the head of a goat, which is collectively thrown into the sea as an act of cultural significance. This tradition has deep roots in the Donomulyo community and represents a unique aspect of their cultural heritage.

The Larung Labuhan Gunung Kumbang ceremony and the communal procession at Ngliyep Beach, located in Kedungsalam Village, Donomulyo District, Malang Regency, are not only cultural events but also serve as tourist attractions. These events have the potential to attract visitors and boost the local economy.

Apart from the goat's head, other offerings include buffalo heads, tumpeng (cone-shaped rice), various flowers, and young coconuts, all of which are collectively offered to the sea. This tradition reflects the deep cultural roots and traditions of the Donomulyo community.

In conclusion, the Larung Saji tradition in Ngliyep Beach, particularly the Larung Labuhan Gunung Kumbang event, serves as a remarkable example of how cultural preservation can simultaneously stimulate tourism and benefit the local economy. This tradition not only connects the community to its rich heritage but also invites visitors to explore the natural beauty and cultural significance of the Malang region. (*)
